It is quite common these days for young people in many countries to have a break from studying after graduating from high school. This trend is not restricted to rich students who have the money to travel, but is also evident among poor students who choose to work and become economically independent for a period of time. This essay will analyze the pros and cons of taking a year off at the turning point of secondary to undergraduate education. Young adults usually choose to get enrolled into a university directly after high school for the continuity of education. However, it is also a good idea to spend some time earning a living or traveling to other places after finishing secondary school. In this way, they often can obtain a broader view of life and better personal resources to draw on. With hands-on experiences gained, they certainly can get a deeper insight into the reality of the society, and hence make clear as well as be better prepared for their future career ambitions. Youngsters who have experienced a gap year certainly would be more independent, the benefits of which cover many aspects of students’ lives both academically and mentally. Without this independence, they may not be able to get accustomed to college life in a real sense. In the aspect of academic study and research, they can surely conduct self-study in a more efficient way with this self-reliance compared with their peers, which is a request of learning in college. Moreover, they are equipped with enough courage to face all kinds of challenges in life and tend to be more optimistic owing to the independence developed from the year. Therefore, they will have greater chances of achieving success in their college life. However, there are certainly dangers in taking time off at that important age. After all, they are still teenagers and you can’t always expect them to make wise judgments, especially under some complicated circumstances. Young people may end up never returning to their studies or finding it difficult to readapt to an academic environment. They may think that it is better to continue in a particular job, or to do something completely different from a university course. But overall, I think this is less likely today, when academic qualifications are essential for getting a reasonable career. In conclusion, although there are undoubtedly some problems with having a gap year between high school and college, my view is that young people should be encouraged to broaden their horizons. That is the best way for them to get a clear perspective of what they are hoping to do with their lives and why. Students with such a perspective are usually the most effective and motivated ones and taking a year off may be the best way to gain this.
