答案 China’ s Environment Challenged by Rapid Economic Growth After the reform and opening-up, China’ s economy witnesses a rapid growth, causing great changes in the whole society: people’ s living standard on the whole has increased a great deal; modern convenient transportations have taken the place of the old-fashioned ones. But lying behind the dazzling achievements are the terrible and severe problems, such as environment pollution, population expansion, natural resources drying-up, and the polarization between the rich and the poor, among which, the environment problem is the most serious. China’ s environment is challenged bythe rapid economic growth. The challenge mainly refers to four aspects; air, water, ecological system and industry wastes. First, the rapid economic growth deteriorates the quality of air. In the rapid developing period, industries compete to manufacture and thus let out more gas waste into the air than in the past, which largely increases the carbon and sulfur dioxide amount in the air. Together with the daily life soot waste and the exhaust gas generated by cars, the industry gas waste makes the air more polluted. Second, the rapid economic growth pricks up water pollution, making water shortage more severe. As industries develop, they generate more waste water everyday; without enough sewage treatment facility, the wastewater will have to be emitted into rivers or water sources, unprocessed. Then the river or the water source will be contaminated, making the drinking water less accessible. Consequently , the dwindling of the drinking water will further sharpen the water shortage crisis. Thirdly, the amazing economic growth is at the expense of the ecological system. To support the rapid economic growth, people have to exploit more from the nature. Large areas of forests are cut down for timbers; fertile lands are exploited for factory build-up or speedway construction; even the lakes or oceans are drained for industry or agriculture use. The economic growth just develops for money’ s sake, without any slight observance of the general rule of nature, causing severe desertification and epidemic diseases. The frequent sandstorms in the northern part and the outbreaks of SARS are just a warning alarm. Fourthly, in the rapid developing process, industries generate some solid waste whose amount is too large for the industries to deal with properly. The solid wastes take up large space and will cause second pollution to the air and water. So far, no efficient methods have been found to deal with so many solid wastes. If the economy keeps its breakneck development, without taking efficient measures to deal with the wastes it generates, the environment will some day collapse. The original purpose of economic development is to offer people a better living circumstance, but the deteriorating environment will offset the economic achievements, which makes the economic growth meaningless. So changes must be made and measures have to be taken in time. In the later development, the nation should shift from extensive economic operation to intensive economic operation, and strike a balance between economic development and environment protection, so as to set up a harmonious relationship between them and realize common progress.
