Major Steps: Step 1 Pre-reading (5 minutes) (1) Teaching new words Show a photo of Edison and a photo of an electric light on the PPT. T: Can you tell me who he is? Ss: Edison. T: Excellent! Look, what’s this? Ss: Electric light. T: Right. Do you know the relationship between Edison and electric light? Ss: Edison发明了electric light. T: Yes, we can say Edison invented the electric light. Invented is the past tense form of "invent" . Show the word "invent" on the PPT, and then lead students to read it a few times. Teach other words in the similar way. (2) Predicting Show three pictures on the textbook and ask students to predict what the article is about. (Justification: By using pictures, students can understand the meaning of these words more easily. Besides, the predicting activity can arouse students’ interest in this article.) Step 2 While-reading (10 minutes) (1) Fast reading T: Now read the passage quickly and check if you have made the right predictions and then answer the question below. Which three museums do the students talk about? (2) Careful reading T: Read the article again and find the answers to the following questions. ① What does Ken say about the American Computer Museum? ② What can we learn at the International Museum of Toilets? ③ Why is the Hangzhou National Tea Museum a nice place to enjoy tea? ④ What do you think is the most interesting thing about each museum? (Justification: This step trains students’ reading ability to find out the main idea quickly and deal with detailed information properly, as well as thinking ability. Students can have a better understanding of the article after answering the questions.) Step 3 Post-reading (5 minutes) Divide the whole class into groups of four. And then ask each group to talk about what the computer and toilet will be like in the future and design the ideal models. After students finish, ask some groups to show or describe their models in front of the class. (Justification: Designing models can stimulate students’ imagination and innovation and make them consolidate the knowledge they’ve gained in class.)
