Teaching Key and Difficult Points: (1) Teaching key point How to help students know more information about the life of Ye Xiaogang. (2) Teaching difficult point How to develop students’ awareness of career planning. Major Steps: Step 1 Pre-reading (6 minutes) (1) Teach new words "composer, lecturer, album" through pictures. Teach "symphony" through playing pieces of music. Then ask students to make sentences using these new words. (2) Have a free talk with students about the identity of Ye Xiaogang. (Justification: Teaching new words with different methods helps students better understand the passage. Free talk enables students to predict the passage.) Step 2 While-reading (8 minutes) (1) Skimming Students will be given 3 minutes to skim and summarize the main idea of the passage and check if they have made the right prediction previously. They needn’t read it word by word, but pay attention to the topic sentence of each paragraph. (2) Scanning Students will be given five minutes to read the passage for the second time and fill in the form below. [*] (Justification: Reading for the first time is to train students’ ability to read for general idea and the second time is to help students to get some detailed information.) Step 3 Post-reading (6 minutes) (1) Retelling Ask students to look through the passage again and then invite some students to introduce Ye Xiaogang in their own words according to the timeline on the blackboard. (2) Group discussion Divide students into groups of four and ask them to have a discussion on the topic: What are you going to do in future and how are you going to do that? After that, invite some groups to share their ideas. (Justification: Retelling will help students understand and master the passage better. Group discussion can cultivate students’ awareness of career planning and lead them to work hard to achieve their dreams.)
