Excerpt 1
Watch out Your Words
Growing up in an era when social media engulf the lives of teenagers everywhere, many students neglect the fact that what they post online can have an impact on where they attend college and their future.
Some teenagers post freely on their social media accounts without realizing the dangers and the repercussions of their actions.
SAT and ACT tutor Adam Moss of Broward Tutorial Services said that while not all college admissions officers are checking into a potential student’s social media page, some certainly are.
"Not all colleges will look into a social media profile, but pictures of drinking and partying are obviously problematic," Moss said. "Colleges want students who will be ’non-problematic’ members of their campus communities, and cyber-bullying, negative postings about schools and teachers, and things like posting fight videos or not safe for work (NSFW) material are bad ideas. "
Moss believes that maintaining a positive image on social media is very important not only for students, but for those competing for jobs as well.
"Managing one’s image is, like it or not, a vital piece of succeeding in today’s competitive world," Moss said. "Businesses and celebrities spend huge sums of money to manage their public personas, and in a way, students should be their own ’ image consultants’. Many of the things that teenagers think are private and difficult for an expert to track down, are silly mistakes that can leave permanent trails online. "
Excerpt 2
Free Speech on the Social Media
Cypress Bay junior Eli Nir doesn’t think posting on social media is worth it in today’s competitive society.
" I have my own social media accounts," Nir said. "It’s not a bad thing to be open about your life on social media, but it really just depends on the type of person you are. As long as someone doesn’t post anything stupid, it shouldn’t matter in the long run. "
Cypress Bay High School adviser Shari Bush said students shouldn’t be wary of what they post online solely for the reason of college applications, but they should really pay attention to the bigger picture, which is their future.
"We live in a culture right now where everything is blasted out there for everyone to see. I think that there should be some humility and sensitivity about the stuff that some students post about themselves," Bush said.
Zuckerman feels that overall, it’s a personal decision on how a student wants his life to turn out, but she feels that it is better for her to hold back when posting on her social media sites.
While some conservatives hold back the idea that students can post freely on the Internet, students themselves argue for their own rights of free speech protected by the Constitution. Besides, they say that they post photos about their self-images and details of their lives just to broadcast their pride and joy to the world. "I think it’s just to get attention and to find your likes and make friends with them," explains Lily, a 14-year-old in NY. As pointed by her, posting and getting comments from the Internet enlarges their scope of finding a friend who shares the same interest and hobby.

答案
Students Should Be Prudent of What They Post on the Internet Seldom do students realize that their postings on social media have been examined by some college admissions officers to judge their eligibility. However, freedom of speech is often the three words argued for students’ "choice" on account that they aspire to share the pleasure of life and make friends through social media. In my viewpoint, student activities must be kept under close scrutiny when they post online contents. Intoxicated with the right of free speech that is safeguarded by the Constitution, we ordinary people should be, at the same time, keenly aware that every endowed right goes with some limits. Over-the-top party pictures, relationship drama or even the airing of grievances over your teachers and schools would be among the blacklists of your post since one with sobriety should keep in mind that a person’s social profile goes from a private conversation to the one open for the whole world to peep within seconds. Students’ oversized egos and low sense of vigilance of the powerful Internet make themselves the backfire targets by their own senseless words. We have repeatedly witnessed cases when poorly improvised tweets have ruined the promising careers of prominent people. When online time has become more interwoven into millions of people’s daily life, the line between work and private life blurs. The inappropriate comments we casually post online can be used against us in ways that we’ve never thought possible. Therefore, prudence over our posts should be given priority to. A quote from BBC is that " social media can be used to make or break a business" , so can it make or break a person. Therefore, general ground rules for what students post online must be given out. Moreover, warnings that anything they post on their own accounts will reflect on their self-image should be given to students. Hopefully, with the avoidance of missteps that may devastate people’s whole life, we can still enjoy the free air on the Internet.
