问题    Interpret the following passages from English into Chinese. Start interpreting at the signal and stop at the signal. You may take notes while you are listening. You will hear each passage only once. Now, let’s begin.
Today, I would like to talk to you about why we need to protect our oceans which, closely connected to lakes, streams, wetlands and rivers, create a water system that covers 70 percent of the earth’s surface. The health of our oceans is also critical to our wellbeing. Let me give you an example. We humans consume over 100 million tons of food from the oceans every year. This translates into 18 percent of our protein intake. When the oceans are polluted, decrease of aquatic products will lead to rising poverty and hunger.
Climate change has caused the temperature of the oceans to fluctuate and the height of waves to increase at a very fast rate. A major tidal wave in severe weather such as typhoons and storms will have grave consequences for coastal cities. This is a big problem for our planet. Forty percent of the world’s population lives within a coastal zone, and a quarter of that total lives in a low-lying coastal area. More severe storms are going to lead to more flooding of those areas, destroying homes and businesses and causing economic disasters. Keep in mind that when I talk about coastal living, it is not just farms or fishing villages, but major cities. The number of mega cities located in coastal areas increased from just one in 1950 to more than 14 in 2011. And the trend is to keep developing in this fashion. Almost without exception, we have polluted or severely changed virtually every major river system around the world. And this invariably leads to pollution of the oceans.
We must consider what steps we should take to protect the oceans. First, we cannot possibly tame the world’s oceans, rivers, lakes, or weather patterns. It is simply unrealistic to think that we can build increasingly higher dykes to completely protect ourselves from the power of nature. Second, nature itself provides a solution. In the case of flooding, pollution, and rising tides, wetlands provide a natural buffer zone. We have destroyed these environments because we do not understand their significance. We must restore them for our own protection. Blind urban development in coastal areas should stop.
Third, there is no question that we must take steps to reduce the output of waste including fertilizers and chemicals going into our water systems and oceans. Agriculture is the biggest offender, but the reduction of these products on our lawns will have a powerful impact on the health of river systems and oceans. Another simple yet effective solution is reducing the use of plastic water bottles.
While we must take actions along rivers and coastal areas, we must not limit our vision to them. We must also focus on exploration of the deep-ocean environment. Ninety percent of the oceans are unexplored. The deep oceans have abundant natural resources that can be used for energy, food and medicine, to name a few. We must also protect whales and sharks, whose survival is threatened. They are the guards of the sea. If we listen, they tell us what is happening in the ocean environment. Understanding their immune systems can help us prepare for any adverse changes in our own environment. We must also protect the food chain in our oceans and waterways so that it will help ensure a balanced maritime environment.
Our world is an ocean planet, and so we must think about what surrounds us. We cannot take it for granted if we seek to thrive as human beings. And each and every one of us must endeavor to protect our oceans by thinking about them, caring for them and taking steps to be more in harmony with them.
