These laws serve as powerful legal guarantees for women’s advancement. Now, 99.8 percent of Chinese girls who have reached school age are enrolled, meeting the target set by the United Nations. Female students account for 52 percent of college enrollment, a percentage higher than that of male students and the applicable international standards. The social and political status of Chinese women is steadily enhanced. Women account for 48 percent of civil servants. Women’s equal right to employment is also ensured. In 2013, women took up 45 percent of the country’s total employment. The Chinese government has released over 200 billion yuan in preferential loans to help more than 10 million women seek self-employment. The health of Chinese women has steadily improved. The average life expectancy of Chinese women reached 77 in 2010, four years longer than that in 2000, and five years longer than that of men. On the other hand, China also faces some difficulties and challenges in protecting the rights and interests of women. For example, in rural areas some families still want to have boys rather than girls, and this has led to gender imbalance. In some companies, particularly private businesses, women do not get the same pay for the same job as men. Domestic violence still exists in some places. The Chinese government takes these problems very seriously. For instance, China’s first law against domestic violence has already been put into effect. China will also step up international exchanges and cooperation on women-related issues, get actively involved in women-related activities at the United Nations and make a greater contribution to the cause of global gender equality.
