Do You Think
You Will Have Your Own Robot?
When we watch movies about the future, we sometimes see robots. They are usually just like human servants. They help with the housework and do jobs like working in dirty or dangerous places.
Today there are already robots working in factories. For example, they can help to build cars, and they do simple jobs over and over again. Fewer people will do such jobs in the future because they are boring, but robots will never get bored.
Some scientists believe that there will be more robots in the future. However, they agree it may take hundreds of years. Scientists are now trying to make robots look like humans and do the same things as us. Some robots in Japan can even walk and dance. These kinds of robots are fun to watch.
But scientist James White thinks that it will be difficult for a robot to do the same things as a person. For example, it is easy for children to wake up and know where they are. Mr. White thinks that robots won’t be able to do this, but some scientists disagree. They think that robots will even be able to talk like humans in 25 to 50 years.
New robots will have many different shapes. Some will look like humans, and others might look like snakes. If buildings fall down with people inside, snake robots will be able to help look for people under the buildings. That may not seem possible now, but computers and rockets seemed impossible 100 years ago. We never know what will happen in the future!

Step 2 While-reading (8 minutes) 1. Fast reading Ask students to read this passage quickly and conclude the main idea of each paragraph, then choose some students to share their ideas. 2. Careful reading (1) Ask students to read this passage carefully and judge the following statements with true or false. ① Some scientists think we will have our own robots in the future. ( ) ② James White thinks that it’s easy for a robot to do the same things as a person. ( ) ③ Some scientists think that robots can talk to people now. ( ) ④ Robots working in factories look more like huge arms. ( ) ⑤ After an earthquake now, a snake robot can help look for people under buildings. ( ) (2) Ask students to underline all the sentences of future indefinite tense and teach them how to use "will" to make predictions. Then divide students into several groups to talk about the future by using "will". (Justification: This step can help students to get a better understanding about this article and master the usage of future indefinite tense.) Step 3 Post-reading (5 minutes) 1. Ask students to talk about these questions: In what ways do you think a robot will help or block you in the future? What do you think of the future of robots, optimistic or pessimistic? 2. Ask students to write down their ideas about robots and invite some to share the ideas with classmates. (Justification: This step can improve students’ writing and speaking abilities.)
