With a total length of about 1,797 kilometers, it is the longest artificial waterway with the oldest history in the worldwide. On June 22, 2014, it was officially selected into the World Heritage List. Hangzhou also enjoys a high reputation in the globe. In the 13th century, the famous Italian traveler Marco Polo praised Hangzhou as "the most beautiful city in the world" in his travel notes. In 2011, Hangzhou was not only named as one of the world’s 41 tourist cities by the New York Times, but also was selected as an "International Garden City" by the United Nations. This city has once played an important role in the process of the establishment of Sino-US diplomatic relations. In January 2015, "tourism diplomacy" was proposed to develop by China. As a famous tourist city, Hangzhou took the lead in putting "tourism diplomacy" into practice again.
