W: At last, George, I’m glad you could make it. I’m hearing rumor of a budget overrun on filming that commercial of ours I mean the Dancing Sand Project. Please tell me I’m imagining things!
M: Well, we’ve had eight days of incessant rain, two cameras damaged in transit and now the electricity generator’s broken down. Using a real desert island for the shoot was a bad idea and a bad start. Using a big Hollywood star was asking for trouble. Diana, the leading lady, came down with some kind of tropical fever two days ago and hasn’t come out of her hotel room since. So far we’ve only got about 15% of the commercial in the can.
W: I had lunch yesterday with Netvillier’s new head of marketing, Mr. DuPont, and he sounded pretty annoyed with what he called our ’endless production hold-ups’. He even said they may be forced to postpone the Dancing Sand launch. I’m sure I don’t need to remind you that Netvillier is by far this company’s biggest European client — worth £10m annually. The loss of their account would have a drastic effect on both Group turnover and our reputation in the industry.
M: What about the budget? Are you saying it may overrun?
W: Well, the Netvillier marketing people were extremely unhappy when we came in # 250,000 over budget last time, and it was for this reason that they insisted at the planning stage on a ceiling of # 2. 5m for the Dancing Sand. . I’ve been looking at the figures and we’re well past the # 2m mark already. The main problem is this two-day film shoot on the desert island. It has already cost us # 1m. Diana, the leading lady our client insisted on using, is costing us £100,000 a day! What on earth is going on there? I estimate that with post production costs, we could run £500,000 over budget on this one.
M: We’ve heen trying to keep costs down all the time. The crew are staying on the island until we’re finished. Yesterday was the first fine day, but there was still no sign of Diana, so we’d just got some footage of the island.
W: So what are your proposals for reducing the overall production costs?
M: I strongly suggest we find an A-list actress to replace Diana and seriously consider filming the remaining part of the commercial in a studio in Britain.
