I wish to extend our hearty welcome to all the distinguished guests from all over the world. Shanghai International Film Festival made its debut in 1993 with the objective to promote understanding and friendship among people of the film community across countries and regions in the world and boost the exchange and prosperity of the world’s motion picture art. It has proved itself to be a grand gathering and a cultural feast for worldwide film artists and professional communities of the media. The Festival is a magnet attracting outstanding films from all over the world. With a rich variety of subject matter, some of the competing films are new offerings of senior master-hands and some are pioneer products of young talents. Whatever topics and styles these films exhibit, they invariantly showcase through stories and images the splendor of the multicultural world, excite the viewers’ emotions and inspire their hearts and souls. This is where the charm of films lies. And this is where our purpose of hosting film festivals lies. I wish the Seventeenth Shanghai International Film Festival a complete success. I wish all the distinguished guests and friends a pleasant stay in Shanghai. Thank you.
