   大家可能会问，为什么这个从事汉语教学的机构叫孔子学院?孔子是两千多年以前中国一位伟大的思想家和教育家。他主张的一整套道德行为准则，影响了一代又一代的中国人。他特别主张实行全面教育，认为所有人都有受教育的权利。可以说，孔子在塑造中华文明的过程中，起到了关键的作用。中国政府把这个机构命名为孔子学院，表明了我们当代中国人对这位古代先贤的尊重，和我们愿与其他国家分享中国文化的强烈愿望。

I wish to thank your university for being the co-sponsor of the Confucius Institute with the Chinese side. Since it launched reform and opening-up, China has maintained increasingly close contacts with the international community; and the international community has followed developments in China with intense interest. As a result, more and more foreigners want to learn Chinese. To meet this huge demand, in 2004 the Chinese Government opened the first overseas Confucius Institute through cooperation with a foreign university. This has proved very successful. In just 10 years, China has opened 440 Confucius institutes and 646 Confucius classrooms in 120 countries and regions. By the end of 2013, some 850,000 people had studied at Confucius institutes, and 28,000 Chinese and foreign teachers had taught Chinese at Confucius institutes. The Confucius Institute, as a platform of boosting educational and cultural exchanges, has greatly enhanced mutual understanding and friendship between China and other countries. You may wonder why this institute devoted to the teaching of the Chinese language is called the Confucius Institute. Confucius was a great Chinese thinker and educationist over 2,000 years ago. He advocated a whole set of ethical conduct that has influenced generations of Chinese people. In particular, he advocated education for all, believing that everyone has the right to education. Thus, Confucius played a crucial role in the development of the Chinese civilization. The naming of the Confucius Institute by the Chinese Government shows that we in contemporary China hold this ancient Chinese sage in high respect and that we have the strong desire to share the Chinese culture with other countries. This year marks the 10th anniversary of the opening of the Confucius Institute. Your university’s decision to jointly set up the Confucius Institute with the Chinese side will not only meet public demand for learning Chinese in your country, but also deepen your university’s exchanges with its Chinese counterparts. Moreover, this will help strengthen the interaction between our two peoples. I am confident that through the joint efforts of the two sides, this Confucius Institute will surely become a success and serve as an important window of learning about China in your country.
